To "make" the "golden ratio", do the following.:

Draw a square (AFBC)

Bisect BC and call the midpoint of BC "E".

Using radius EF and center E, draw a circle.

extend CB to meet the circle at D.

BC and DB are in the proportion 1.618...to 1.
